you can cry all you want about how "senpai" can have an English equivalent but in the end the Japanese word has its own connotations (which has, surprise surprise, been able to translate into Western fandom when translators choose to keep it!)

okay whatever this guy is an official translator and I'm just a bitch who studied some Japanese but the fact remains that when you translate something you aren't magically moving the setting elsewhere, most of the time we are reading manga about Japanese people in Japan

while I'm still salty abt this let me add that adding translators notes doesn't overencumber a manga with "education" thus ruining the "entertainment"

using "learning about American culture via Avengers" is such a piss-poor example, American culture is almost entirely based off consumerism and false mythos
meanwhile Japan, whose modernization occurred SO RAPIDLY after its borders were forced open, still has tons of traditions

its just so strange after reading some huge classic works (namely War & Peace and The Tale of Genji) whose translators work so hard to CONTEXTUALIZE everything, even going so far as occasionally keeping the original Japanese / Russian and footnoting bc it works better that way
but bc it's manga and for entertainment and not niche we can't do that. lmao okay
