(1) As an MS4 applying into IM residency, I would end all of my interviews with a question about examples of women in leadership positions. If I was lucky, I was interviewing with one of them. If I wasn't, I would watch faculty members rack their brains for an answer
(2) Even then I knew how important it was to see leaders that look like you and to see an institution that values inclusivity and different points of view
(3) Viewed in that lens, its no wonder I ended up at @WCM_GIM, home of more of these women than I can count (although you can watch us try in our #weillcornellWCW series on our @WCM_MedChiefs account...) 💪👩‍⚕️
(4) I can still remember my interview day at @WCM_MedChiefs when #kiranagudi walked into the room to start the day. She wasn't our program director yet, but she would be by the time I started intern year. Her talk gave me chills, her magenta heels were just a bonus đź‘
(5) I have more of these stories about #leeshearer who convinced me primary care was for me (she was right, as usual) and @SusanaMoralesM8 and @JudyTungMD and @mad_sters and @PeggyLeungMD who was my ambulatory chief as an intern and whom I strive to emulate daily
(7) "Over a 35 year period, women physicians in academic medical centers were less likely than men to promoted to the rank of associate or full professor or to be appointed to dep't chair, and there was no apparent narrowing in the gap over time."
(8) My instinct is to find this disheartening - and sometimes I do - but I know that there is room for change and growth. To reflect on our own biases, support each other, provide flexibility, partner with #heforshe allies, and reach for the next opportunity...
(9) All with hope that the next generation of women physicians won't even have to ask the question. /end
