When I think of a feminist, I think of someone like Dorothy Sayers or Louisa May Alcott who blazed paths that made it possible for women to vote and less difficult for us to have careers and be valued for our ideas. It grieves me to hear Christians using “feminist” as a slur.
Sure, there are some 3rd Wave Feminists who are basically abortion obsessed misandrists. But it’s also true that I want to be able to support my kids if something ever happened to Jason, and I’m done being looked down on by people simply because I’m female.
How does it honor Jesus if we’re badmouthing and mocking “feminists” rather than intelligently opposing specific ideas or immoral causes we disagree with? Do you not intend to witness to feminists? Are they too beneath you? Are they less deserving of the Gospel than you?
I just came across this tweet, and honestly it upset me. This Christian woman can vote, drive, own property, and divorce an abusive husband, because of brave women who went before us who stood against sexism and influenced this great nation where women are beginning to be valued.
Any time you use a word like “feminist,” you have to understand that not everyone thinks of what you’re thinking of. If you want to be valued only for sex and cooking, that’s your choice, but I’ve lived through that hell and I want a much better life for me and my daughters.
I know what it’s like to live with a man who treats you as a subspecies. I know what it’s like to be told that educating you is a waste of money, that you’re a piece of meat, that your value is measured by how well you clean, cook, and take a beating.
You don’t want to be like me? Fine. I honestly don’t care. Regardless, I’m still the person who will go with you to fill out a police report and help your kids find a therapist if God forbid you ever need that kind of help. That’s the fighter in me, and I won’t apologize for it.
