I want to say thanks to all those who have reached out with kind words about our story and the value of the investigative reporting @charlesrusnell and I do. I didn't have time to respond a lot yesterday but I saw and appreciated them.

Of course, my Twitter mentions and email inbox are also filled with some vile stuff. That comes with the territory and you become somewhat inured to it. I'm not in this job to be liked.

Make no mistake, journalists absolutely should be subject to scrutiny and criticism.
Still astounded, though, by those who can read what was said in those meetings - political direction to eschew enforcement of health orders, to be "leading Albertans where they want to go, not forcing them where they don't" -and say this isn't in the public interest to report.
We have also seen a lot of statements denouncing our sources, and baselessly ascribing political or personal motives to their actions. That is infinitely more frustrating than personal attacks on me and I will always stand up for those who take these risks in the public interest.
One other thing: @charlesrusnell and I have done this work together for many years now. I was first byline on yesterday's story and did all the radio and TV hits. We're a team and neither of us craves the spotlight so trust me when I say there is never any jockeying for position.
But being young and starting your career alongside someone with decades of investigative reporting experience has its associated frustrations, both within the newsroom and outside it. Too many times to count, I have had my contributions diminished or questioned by others.
Will never forget going to a public lecture in 2013, and Charles introducing me to a former colleague, who then asked him, "So you finally got a research assistant, huh?" Then going into the lecture, where a story I broke (solo) was discussed at length by the presenter.
Or the many instances in which (some) colleagues questioned why it was me fronting a story, even though it was my source or tip that led to the piece. Even though Charles has always quickly corrected the record...yeah, it wears on you.
I want to make it clear that this is absolutely not true of everyone. I have many, many wonderful and supportive colleagues who respect what I bring to the table. And acquaintances and strangers who do the same.
But I am especially fortunate to have spent 8 years working with someone who has -- from the very beginning -- championed my work, respected my input, and pushed hard for me to get recognition and respect. Not to mention provided years of mentorship.
It's not always comfortable to talk about these things but this is an issue in journalism that should be highlighted more. And one I try to keep in mind when dealing with other young reporters. (End)
