Pockets in Hindi / Urdu : a journey from chest to the hips
H/U word for pocket is jeb जेब which is related to Arabic jaib (= opening at the neck and bosom (of a shirt). An equivalent word for Arabic "jaib" came from Persian in H/U गरेबान garebān (collar, cloth around neck).
This गिरेबान garebān or girebān is a cognate of Sanskrit  ग्रीवा grīvā́ (= neck). The usage of jeb जेब for pockets came in vogue because earlier pockets on shirts were made next to neckline. Their use ■जेब jeb■ continues even when the they moved from the chest to the hips.
