Re-watched Silence of the Lambs last night--truly a high point of gothic cinema. Love the close up shots heightening audience response, underground cells, & underground prison in Buffalo Bill's house, motifs of natural metamorphosis. Masterpiece https://twitter.com/ddoniolvalcroze/status/1329620326007799809?s=20
Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Lecter is considered one of the greatest performances of all time, but Jodie Foster is just as brilliant portraying the orphaned FBI agent Clarice Starling. She's tough but still manages to trigger the protective instincts of the elder men around her
Could such a movie be made today? I doubt it. No film-maker would dare portray a serial killer wannabe transexual or a strong female character who yearns for a lost father. Too subtle, too complex. Too human.
