Conservatism is not a desire to return to the past; it is a desire to hold on to the ancient core values inherited from the past in order to be guided by them into a better future. It is always looking to the future through the lens of those values with a desire to pass them on.
The problem with current conservatism is that it has fossilized the structures of the past, & misconstrued those structures as core values, &/or it has truncated those values into one or two issues: smaller government, unconstrained capitalism, sanctity of the yet-to-be-born, etc
We must conserve government of the people, by the people, and for the people whether the government is large or small. We must conserve personal freedom including private ownership of property through responsible citizenship and healthy constraints on capitalism.
We must vigorously labor in behalf of the unborn because all life is sacred and is worthy of justice regardless of gender, age, soundness of mind and/or body, race, ethnicity, finances, or social standing.
We need true conservatives who look for and work toward a future that is guided by the proven core values of our past. For Christians those values must be grounded in the holiness and righteousness of God as revealed in the Bible.
But we believers must recognize as did the early Christians that God has caused truth-wisdom-values to flow from many non-Christian sources as a witness to his love for all humanity. Oppression of any kind must be eliminated, not rebranded as conservative cultural preservation.
