For smaller products, I'm experimenting with simpler, black and white interiors (which are still attractive). There are a few reasons... #dnd #ttrpg
An obvious one is cost. If a product is going to be under $5 then you usually can't afford full color interiors and art. I think there is a market for under $5 products, and we need to match product to price point.
Another reason is that I get pretty frequent requests for "printer friendly" versions of my products. It is time-prohibitive for smaller products to produce two versions, but if you default to a b/w product with a white page, you are covered.
I also went back and reviewed some of my older stuff as part of "The Anatomy of Adventure," and realized how simple the interiors for many of those products were. Yet they still sold well and got good reviews.
I've also been looking at some of the great products of the 90s, stuff like Vampire: The Masquerade. Huge seller with a pretty simple b/w interior.
I've also been super impressed with Mork Borg (like everyone). While not b/w, it does show you what you can achieve with a two-colour pallete.
Anyway, we will see how this little experiment goes. There will no doubt be some exceptions due to books already in process, but I want to give b/w interiors a good shot over the coming little while.
