Thread of some of my favorite groupings of musicians to ever record jazz music.
Miles Davis Quintet

This particular quintet of Miles had made some incredible strides, with complete synergy and ambition they continuously deconstructed and revolutionized their music by the mid 60s and onward to incredible heights in modern jazz music.
"Out to Lunch" recording quintet

Eric Dolphy worked with an ever-changing list of artists, but Out to Lunch by far holds the most power and edge of any. Such immense and layered bop was produced it remains unparalleled even in retrospect. It's evergreen, and comfortably wonky.
John Coltrane Quartet

Perhaps the greatest combo of all, four geniuses unite under Coltrane's vision. Such pillars of jazz performance, each deliver such an incredible amount to a recording that none can be mistaken. If these four are on a record it is guaranteed a masterwork.
Art Ensemble of Chicago

Spawned from the AACM, the AEC remain a massive force in the avant garde after 50 years, now fronted by founding members Roscoe Mitchell and Don Moye. Everything about them holds great depth, from the music explorations down to their afro-centric imagery.
Producing only a couple records, the results of their work together still rock the period of modern jazz, perhaps everything I appreciate in said period can be found in such works as Firebirds. The range of their musicianship and imagination have them near the top.
The Jazz Messengers

Like AEC, more of a collective, as Blakey cycled through suitable young musicians through time, himself older than most modern jazz artists. Which is apt as it reflects in the contantly fresh output through the 60s, with especially fun compositions.
Albert Ayler Trio

Spiritual Unity is enough evidence of how far this trio could go, nothing isn't daring about their approach. Completely untamed expression on display, intact in the blues influence of Ayler's playing. This approach effectively paved the way for avant garde jazz
Ornette Coleman Quartet

Lineups would also be cyclic, Blackwell and Billy Higgins trading spots in the early 60s. But generally, Coleman's exercizes in bebop derived jazz also helped shape the direction of the avant garde given just how far ahead of the curve Coleman was.
