i'm sorry to say it but... Nintendo bad. https://twitter.com/IGN/status/1329643394822443009
Nintendo's negative impact on videogames as a whole is probably just slightly greater than their positive impact
probably not a popular stance to take but i think more people will come around to it in the future
Nintendo is sort of like Disney in that they want to put their whole brand stamp over the idea of "childhood magic" and create an army of loyal lifetime consumers of their products. their ubiquity is pretty much burned into everyone's subconscious by now that it's inescapable.
i feel that stamping yourself so largely over people's childhoods to a point where you start to permanently own those feelings of innocence and wonder in culture as a whole is a kind of psychological warfare but i realize that's not a popular or consensus position to take
as adults we may be hollowed out automatons whose true role is only to work and serving the market as an end unto itself but at least we can pay a company to lease those childhood feelings of wonder and innocence to us for couple of hours a night
the ultimate goal of a Nintendo or Disney is to own any and all kind of culture within their own walled corporate garden and ensure that any kinds of grassroots cultures which may pervert or subvert the meanings of those things be exposed and disciplined
Nintendo may want to take the face of a sad developer who is not seeing the money they should be because of some malevolent pirates stealing their labor, but what they're actually doing is working to destroy culture that doesn't exist within their own walled garden of control
