Some people have asked why C* would censor queer content here when they have other openly queer characters. Here are my thoughts. #TheyWillNeverSilenceUs #LGBTFansDeserveBetter
First, it’s important to know that many of those "openly queer characters" have had horrendous storylines that have ended in violence and tragedy. No matter what, C* is not exactly a hero for the gays. #TheyWillNeverSilenceUs #LGBTFansDeserveBetter
But I also think there’s something in particular about Destiel, specifically, going canon. Dean and Cas were never supposed to be queer. There was always subtext and queer-coding, of course, but they were never intended to be actually queer. #TheyWillNeverSilenceUs
The reading of them as queer was made popular by the fans. Many writers & actors pushed back against it, made fun of it, explicitly said it wld never happen. But queer fans persisted. It is, probably, the most popular ship of all time. (See stats on ao3.) #TheyWillNeverSilenceUs
Making this ship canon would destabilize every other queerbaited ship. It would, in some ways, validate all of us who have ever seen ourselves in queer-coded and queerbaited characters. It would mean that we're right to push for them to be canon. #TheyWillNeverSilenceUs
In addition, making it canon would mean fully centering and validating a queer storyline that has existed for twelve seasons of this show. It would mean that every single moment we read as queer WAS queer. It would mean telling us that we were right. #TheyWillNeverSilenceUs
It would say that queer storylines are worthy of being centered in an epic story that has been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom are straight. It would say that our stories are worthy of that, even when they’re not planned. #TheyWillNeverSilenceUs
There's also something to say about the danger of making D*ean, a supposedly classic All-American ladies man, bisexual. About the danger of making a substantial portion of his story about falling in love with a man and how that love changed him. #TheyWillNeverSilenceUs
I don't know if the C* censored that scene or not. I don't know if there was an original version of the script that had D*ean reciprocating. But even if there wasn't, I think this speaks to why they were so scared to have it go canon or be seen as canon. #TheyWillNeverSilenceUs
