Jason Kenney just cited NL's provincial police force as evidence a similar set-up can work in Alberta. Having non-Albertans (like RCMP) come into the province isn't effective community policing, he says. BUT. The RCMP are the ones who police *all* of rural NL. #ableg #cdnpoli
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary only polices the NE Avalon peninsula, Corner Brook and large Labrador cities - the kinds of places *already* covered by city police forces in Alberta. #ableg
I mean he also referenced the Ontario and Quebec provincial police forces, which are probably more reasonable comparisons. And in fact are the direct opposite of the RNC in that they police *outside* major areas. #ableg
So yeah, if you want an Alberta provincial police force, my tip would be don't use the RNC as evidence it can work... use the OPP. On a related note, everyone should visit rural NL. It's great (and is, once again, policed by the RCMP). #ableg
Also: Amusing Kenney argues non-locals shouldn't come to AB to police it without understanding the communities, while ALSO arguing interprovincial trade/labour barriers should all go, saying “We are not, as some would make us out to be, small-minded regionalists.” #ableg #cdnpoli
And I'm genuinely confused how Kenney is squaring specific UCP programs to attract immigrants here with the notion that non-Albertans shouldn't be allowed to police rural Alberta. #ableg #cdnpoli
Oh and ICYMI, Kenney has already said the Alberta police force and pension plan are Things He Wants. Quote: "I need to be able to persuade the majority of Albertans that policy changes like this are in the net best interest of the province." #ableg #cdnpoli
