Why Jupp Heynckes is probably the most underrated manager of all time?
Why he holds as special place in Bayern history?

Jupp Heynckes is one of the best strikers of all time.
Unfortunately for him, he played in the same era of Gerd Muller [aka The greatest striker of all time].
So, he didn't get enough chances as a German national team player during his playing days.
He spent majority of his career at Borussia Monchengladbach
Jupp played a massive role in the golden era of Gladbach and won 4 Bundesliga titles
However, at national team he always played second fiddle to the GOAT Gerd Muller
He won all the accolades with German National Team
After retiring as player, Jupp Heynckes immediatly began his coaching career at Gladbach.
He started as assistant to Udo Lattek before becoming head coach at only 34.
He went onto manage the club for 8 years
During this time, the Foals remained among the elite in German football, but trophies proved elusive.
They lost the 1980 UEFA Cup final, 1984 DFB Cup final on penalties to Bayern, and made the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1987.
He was often called as a "champion without a title"
Jupp Heynckes moved to Bayern Munich in 1987.
He brought in new ideas and helped Bayern reach to the top of European stage once again.
His first season was a minor success as he only managed to win DFL Super Cup.
But he won two back to back league titles in the following seasons
He also reached the semifinals of European Cup twice during this time.
But glory at continental level proved tough as the team failed to cross the final hurdle.
Although, Bayern played great football under him, the results did not come during 91-92 season
Jupp was sacked by the club after a 4–1 home defeat to Stuttgarter Kickers.
Bayern were reeling at 12th place in the league table. This brought curtains to his first spell.

Uli Hoeness later termed this event as the biggest mistake of his 40-year Bayern career.
In 1992, Jupp signed for Athletico Bilbao becoming only the third German manager to manage in La Liga.
He went on to do great things in Spain during his time in the country.
He helped Athletic club to qualify for UEFA Cup in his second season before returning to Frankfurt in 1994
He did not have great time at Eintracht as he had issues with star players at the club.

Jupp punished few players for not showing extra effort in training sessions and could not contain dressing room.
He was sacked before the end of the season and soon he went back to Spain.
During his two year spell at Tenerife, Jupp exceeded expectations.
He helped the team finish fifth in his first season and reached quarterfinals in Copa del Rey.

In his second season, he finished ninth in La Liga and reached semis in UEFA Cup
After his success, Jupp Heynckes was hired by Real Madrid.
He won the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona immediately.

But the team struggled and finished 4th in the league.
Jupp had phoned Real president and informed he can't work with those players days before UCL final
Jupp Heynckes led Real Madrid to their first ever Champions League in 32 years.
Real were underdogs against Juventus, who were defending champions and were playing third final in a row.
Despite this, he won the match by 1-0. But he was somehow forgotten by most Real fans
He terminated his contract and joined Benfica in 1999
He sold club captain João Pinto to city rivals Sporting CP and became unpopular with fans.
Jupp Heynckes left the club in 2001 and joined Atheltico Bilbao for a second spell.
At Athletic, he failed to qualify for UEFA Cup in his both seasons by just 1 point.
He returned back to Germany to manage Schalke and won UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2003 and 2004.
Jupp joined his home club Mönchengladbach again in 2006 and worked for only six months
During 2009, Bayern were facing tough time under Jurgen Klinsmann.
The Bayern management decided to sack Klinsmann and asked Jupp to help out in caretaker capacity.
He came out of retirement and helped Bayern win 4 out of last 5 league games
Jupp Heynckes helped Bayern finish second place in league after a last surge.
Bayern qualified for UCL after being in tough spot.
Heynckes also came back to club management and took over at Leverkusen in 2009
He went on unbeaten in record 24 Bundesliga matches and challenged Bayern Munich in 2009-10 season.

However, loss of form in the final phase saw them finish fourth.
In 2010-11 season, Leverkusen finished above Bayern and as runnersup to Dortmund
Jupp Heynckes agreed for a third spell at Bayern Munich in March 2011 as he replaced Louis van Gaal.
The team were in a defensive crisis despite finding their identity under van Gaal.
First thing Jupp did was to solidify and brought in Alaba and Boateng into the first team
Bayern made huge strides but painfully finished runners up in all the three competitions.
The team finished second in the league, lost DFB final to BVB.
However, the final nail in the coffin came when the team failed to secure UCL at Allianz Arena against Chelsea
Next season, Jupp managed to rally the entire team behind him
The team won everything by did a historic treble under Jupp
The sweetest moment came when Robben clinched a winner in the final minutes at Wembley and the comeback was complete.
Bayern won everything they lost just an year ago.
Jupp Heynckes became the first German manager to do a treble.
He gave a well drilled team to Pep Guardiola and walked into retirement.
He was already considered an all time great by this time
However, nothing can stop Jupp from helping Bayern when the team is in crisis.
The team was at a very low point when Ancelotti was sacked after an embarassing 3-0 loss in Paris.

Bayern board requested Jupp Heynckes to take over as their new manager on interim basis
The veteran came back to help Bayern for the 4th time.
He got the entire dressing room back to win everything. Bayern got results back in no time.
The players were morally boosted under Jupp and it showed on the pitch.
Bayern were really close to winning another treble in 17-18
But few controversial decisions by referee against Real in semis and final loss to Frankfurt ruined the treble.
Jupp Heynckes finished his spell with a Bundesliga title.
But in the process, he has etched himself into the history of German football forever breaking many records

He looks so stern but can also be gentle when needed.
Heynckes is a very loyal person and shows empathy at his work and to his colleagues.
He rescued Bayern and disappeared and came back again multiple times
He went onto manage Bayern on 4 occasions [record].
Jupp Heynckes proved his worth at small and big clubs throughout his career. He earned a special place in the hearts of Bayern fans.
The amount of sacrifices he made can never be thanked enough by Bayern fans.
