Folks arguing for a silly romcom to enjoy but then are angry over the problematic relationship dynamics/miscommunication tropes that make up romcoms. Someone being a shit, making a grand declaration to apologize, then ending up engaged is the ORIGINAL romcom #HappiestSeason
We’ve been conditioned to accept outlandish, vaguely sociopathic behavior in romcoms be forgiven forever but Harper is problematic? Tom Hanks catfished Meg Ryan after putting her out of business and Sandra Bullock blackmailed Ryan Reynolds to get a green card
Kate Hudson commits to forcing McConaughey to break up with her for a story while he wants to trick her into falling in love with him for a promotion. Michael Vartan is saved from jail b/c luckily Drew Barrymore was lying about her age for a story/promotion
If an audience can forgive Julia Roberts after My Best Friend’s Wedding then we can find a little love for Harper after she is *outed* at her mother’s insane WASPy Christmas party by evil Annie Edison
Also her relationship w/ her sister is insane. Evil Annie Edison is trying to choke her with garland & Harper knows that the best thing to hit her with is the Santa on the table - people are not born with that kind of knowledge #HappiestSeason
Anyone watching that fight go from funny to feral should palpably understand the unbelievable panic of being made to come out before you’re ready. Some y’all didn’t come from families that you love but don’t like and it shows
