Today I want to #DeplatformSBC because non-autistic have been telling me my whole life “that must be so hard for you,” to validate me. Autistic people are saying, “This happens to me [+explanation],” & NOW they are showing empathy in MY language. Y’all just made me feel crazy.
I NEED someone to bring the conversation back to themselves because I live in a world that gaslights me at every turn. I NEED to hear, “This happens to me, too.” I’ve been gaslit so much that I don’t even know what happens to me. I want them to give me solutions or solidarity.
I got put on antipsychotics and a false diagnosis for saying I could hear in color. That’s non-autistic empathy. Autistic people: “I hear in landscape images and see words like captions when people talk.” Now, I feel seen.
Can you imagine how patronizing it is to have a non-autistic person say they know what I must be feeling? No, they don’t know, and that is WHY life is so traumatic for us. They believe they know and cause us extreme hardship because they don’t get it at all.
On the other hand, autistic people will say their closest experiences like an open ended question to let the other person know how close they can get to understanding. That’s been called selfish long enough. It’s not. It’s beautiful. SBC needs to fix what he’s done.
