November 27, 1864: After a strenuous march to Columbia the balance of the Army of Tennessee arrived in front of the Federal works before the town. Bad weather and poor reconnaissance left Hood no option but to hold his position.

With Hood to his front and his back to the Duck River, John Schofield ordered the IV and XXIII Corps to cross the river and destroy the bridges and pontoons once on the north bank.

By the next morning, Schofield’s two corps assumed a position on the north side of the Duck.
