Since the Art Bulletin had never published anything on the Christian #arts of “ #Medieval” #Ethiopia, I'm extremely grateful that the co-editors decided to accept this study of representations of David and Solomon in #illuminated Ethiopic Psalter #manuscripts.
The article sets out to challenge Eurocentric readings of Ethiopian illumination in favour of an approach that credits the intentions and creative agency of local artists and patrons, focusing on a group of miniatures that are rich in allusions to Ethiopian #kingship.
Incidentally, the piece, despite its many limits, presents, what I believe is the first known instance of two pre-16th century Ethiopic manuscripts signed by the same #scribe/ #artist.
