I went independent a year ago.

This is where I found my clients and prospects:

• Previous employer
• Recommended by previous co-worker / manager
• Friends in the industry
• LinkedIn
• Slack communities (prospects only)
• Twitter (prospects only)

🧵
Notice it's not a long list. It doesn't need to be.

You only need a few clients to make it work if you're charging appropriately and taking on big enough projects.

The majority of my income this year came from a single client. Debatable if you want to do this. Worked for me.
When I made went independent, I made sure to tell everyone I know:

- Update LinkedIn profile/share a post
- Tell any previous colleagues
- Tell any friends in the industry
- Update Twitter profile and tweet about it

When people know what you do, they will find or recommend you.
If I am looking for more work because the pipeline is empty, I reach out to people I have already worked with first, and then to my network again to let them know I have availability.

Usually I am in a position where I need to choose between a few options for my next project.
If you're thinking of going independent, I recommend testing the waters first while still employed. Get a side gig. See if you like it.

Before going all in, have savings so you don't end up compromising which projects you take on just because you're in a pinch for cash.
Also if you're thinking of going independent, and you have any questions at all, I'm an open book (as much as I can be)!

Ask me anything!
