The reptile was found abandoned by a Ghatkopar resident who later handed it over to the forest department. We were given the reptile for further medical examination & treatment. (2/N)
The pregnant/gravid tortoise (can be determined once it lays eggs at a later stage.) is in grave condition and has no strength to even come out of its shell.
The reptile's initial medical examination at the Thane SPCA and the x-ray reports reveals presence of three eggs. (3/N)

The tortoise is currently receiving daily treatment by Dr Archana Bapat. The reptile's latest medical examination reveals that it has reached the advanced stage of Metabolic Bone Disease and has very poor chances of survival. (4/N)
Its shell has turned rubber-soft due to prolonged lack of UVB exposure & required dietary supplements.
When tortoise is suffering from MBD its body starts absorbing calcium required for normal metabolic & hormonal funct. from shell, thereby causing excessive softening. (5/N)

Most of the star tortoise kept in illegal captivity are prone to this disease that leads to a slow yet extremely painful death.
Our team is constantly monitoring the tortoise 24/7 and providing it all oral meds, supplements and care as per guidance & instructions of vet. (6/N)

Even though the Indian Star Tortoises are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, they continue to remain one of the most trafficked wildlife.
We would like to request to anyone who is keeping such species illegally to hand it over to the forest department. (7/N)

If it is with a known person like a family member, relative or a friend then politely discourage their act of keeping such species as pets by showing such case studies.
If you encounter an unknown person keeping it illegally then report it at 1926, & lodge an e-complaint. (8/N)

Please do not use any kind of physical or verbal abuse while doing so as it may discourage people to come forward and handover and may even put the reptile's life at risk.

Always seek the assistance of the forest officer of your area or local NGOs to handle the situation.
