This is it — exactly. https://twitter.com/radiofreetom/status/1332133107340873728
MAGA voters see the country changing and it terrifies them. The wall Trump promised on the border was a metaphor for what they wanted — a wall around themselves. A wall to keep out change. To keep out the future.
Trumpism was the howl of a species being left behind by demographic evolution and technological evolution. Unable or unwilling to adapt and compete, they puffed themselves up and threw rocks at the invading tribe.
The technology economy terrifies them. They don’t understand how to participate in it and don’t want to learn. They see millions of people from other parts of the world who *do* get it. The chasm between themselves and those others seems impossible to cross.
Look who they demonize. Big Tech. Scientists. Doctors. The media. Universities. Intellectuals. The “elites,” meaning people who possess the expertise to thrive in an age built around technology and information. Brain People versus Meat People.
In the last economy, Meat People survived by selling their labor, the use of their bodies, to perform physical tasks. Now demand for Meat Jobs dwindles, compensation declines, and the decline is accelerated as globalization exponentially increases competition for Meat Jobs.
So they lash out in two directions — at the people who compete for Meat Jobs, and the Brain People who have successfully crossed over into the information economy.
For decades they’ve been given the road map to survival. They’ve been advised to adapt, to get education, to reskill. They’ve been told exactly which skills would be needed in the information economy and how to get them. They put their heads in the sand.
Instead of embracing science, they retreat into superstition. Note the large number of evangelicals. Note that the SCOTUS case to oppose COVID mandates was brought by a Catholic archdiocese.
The hucksters selling superstition see the new world threatening their control over the population. Encouraged by religious leaders and a con man leader who landed to them, they become ever more defiant— rejecting knowledge, science, expertise.
The Meat People are told that *they* are the elites. They band together. They jeer and howl, puff themselves up— ever seen apes fight?
But evolution grinds on. Trump can’t build a wall against it. The left-behinds can’t scream and jeer and scare away the future. They can’t stop demographic change. Can’t fight the invasion of individuals who can adapt and thrive in the new environment.
It’s superstition versus science. The pandemic accelerates the process. But it was set in motion by technological and economic changes. At a primal level it’s monkeys fighting over food. The MAGA tribe can’t win. They realize it now.
So they cling even more fiercely to the leader who tells them he can turn back evolution and bring back a world where their primitive skills enabled them to survive and compete. The leader is a great ape: loud, large, violent; stupid but cunning. One of them, only smarter.
People who believe in 2000-year-old superstitions already live in delusion. In non-realty. In a world that is anti-science. It makes them susceptible to other delusions. It’s easy to lead them further and further from truth and reality.
