So many liberals and progressives (my people) seem to have stopped reading COVID news past the Spring. And when they do, it's only the most alarmist of headlines. I cannot believe the level of misinformation that is spreading by both sides of the political spectrum now.
Let me provide context for this tweet. Here are some observations for left wing misinformation.
1) Refusing to accept/believe the documented IFR from the CDC & WHO as well as IFR by age.
Ignoring the reduction in IFR from Spring, which has been observed throughout the globe, as a result of new treatments, techniques, containment measures, and accounting for new info from serology data.
Still believing that the CDC attempted to downplay the risk of COVID on children because they allowed information on age-based risk to be broken down further than by age 0-25.
Believing that lockdowns are just a harmless lever that we should pull, without caring about their overall impact on the population weighed against the risk of COVID.
Catastrophizing every report on long COVID without appropriately diving into the context.
Twisting COVID into an issue of personal morality that can be solved by spewing platitudes, over-policing our neighbors, and perpetuating media reports that serve no purpose other than to shame victims.
Praising and supporting inconsistent, unscientific, heavy handed measures to curb spread and labeling anyone who is critical of erroneous and unscientific closures as defacto murderers.
Believing that the US has the worst response to COVID on the globe, when data from other countries and their responses is in front of our face. I cannot believe how many times per day I hear "But the EU kept schools open because they successfully contained the spread!"...
Newsflash: Very few Western countries have contained the spread. We all pretty much suck at containment, w/ few exceptions. This data is available in a thousand places and you shouldn't need to be told this over and over.
Overplaying the risk of reinfection and catastrophizing every report of this rare incidence.
Attempting to justify local, harsh restrictions by using national data, in a country that effectively has 50 separate COVID responses.
Specific to NY, it infuriates me that so many NYers are blissfully unaware that we actually do have one of the most robust testing and tracing infrastructures in the *western* world. We suck at many things, but we run more tests than many countries in the EU.
In NY, since spring, we have developed robust testing capabilities, implemented contact tracing, purchased PPE, improved treatment protocols, mandated masks, kept distancing in place, improved ventilation of indoor spaces.
We should no longer be referencing what occurred in Spring to continue to justify erroneous and unscientific closures, which cause catastrophic, and long-term harm to the lowest risk individuals for severe COVID - children.
