Meantime, who asked about autism and employment?
Here's my own employment summary from the big research papers. Tiny print - will describe in quick thread below.
A big charity decided it was about a third of us in employment.
But I can't find any other big studies that agree/
OK, what are we looking at here.
There are two blue columns. Those are the figures for the general population, so nearly all not autistic. About two thirds are in some kind of paid work. Others volunteer, are parents, are retired, are students, or maybe cannot/do not do those/
Then, we've got a lot of green columns. Each one is a different big bit of research, showing how many of the autistic people were in work, volunteering, retired, students, etc.
Bottom line is how many were earning any money from a job.
On average, just over half/
Others were volunteering, retired, students, parents.
Very few were unemployed/seeking work/not working for various reasons.
None of this is a judgement by the way - I'm totally relaxed about who does what.
But I like good research, and/
/I just can't work out how one big charity got such different results to any of the other big teams.
Now, for sure there is huge prejudice out there, and many obstacles to good employment for us. Many autistic ppl are underemployed, or regularly find themselves removed by/
...bullies, ignorant managers, or sheer exhaustion from trying to cope in an environment which is truly hellish for them (when simple changes would have enabled their fabulous work to happen).
Why does accuracy about employment concern me so much?/
Because I read too many 'think tank' papers saying e.g. "Those autistic people are nothing but an economic burden on us all. Wouldn't it be more fair on society if we got rid of autism from the gene pool? Or compliance-trained the brighter ones so they can Do A Job?"
Ignorance/
How are people measuring worth?
Is an artist worth something?
A musician?
A faith leader?
An actor?
A poet?
An author?
Is a volunteer worth something?
A parent - are they worth something?
How on earth are we measuring economic 'worth', of a person?/
Every person is of equal worth.
Equally deserving of human rights.
Equally deserving of a life in which they can thrive, whether working or not.
But for sure we do not need misinformation out there.
Our lives are difficult enough already without adding more and more nonsense/
We also make it so difficult for autistic people to disclose that they are autistic.
Think about your own company, or University, or school etc.
How easy would it be for an autistic worker to say, "Hey, I'm autistic!" and retain their job?/
We have no idea what the average autistic person does for a living.
We have no idea what the average autistic person earns.
We force people to hide.
We put out myths about what autism is and is not, so many don't even recognise themselves, and don't seek diagnosis/
But somehow we think we know enough to erase autistic people from the future, do we?

Well, that's just silly. It's based on nonsense.

Let's do better.
