The religious right in America is nationalist identity, it is not a faith expressed through practice.
What I mean by this is a reflexive religion-nationalism. It has nothing to do with faith and doctrine. It is a Turk is a Muslim, a Russian is Orthodox and a Tibetan is Buddhist. You identify with this religion based upon where you are born. That’s why in America you get the
religious right that will make a comment like “I’m a Christian and a proud American.” In the same sentence. Then you look at their behavior that is not based on Christian doctrine. For the religious right it is nationalist identity only. It is also ex patria. Ex patria that puts
the political first and is “elite-sponsored” this starts with hijacking religion, it begins with nationalism and from there works out its relationship and how to incorporate religion based on nationalistic and political desires. That’s why we so often call them “cherry pickers”
Then you have ex religio, that starts with religion and from there it works out its relationship with the nation.
The religio-politico-nationialistic view is that the religious identity is that of the dominant religion and tends to view other religions as harmful to unity and well-being so seeks protected and privileged status. It is anti-inclusive and anti-religious doctrines.
And American religion uses the imperialistic “Manifest Destiny” of America was chosen by God. Therefore for nationalistic interest, attack and bomb and take over everywhere because God wants it and it is in the national interest.
A prime example of nationalism hijacking religion to justify barbarism.
And the bizarre thing is that we have seen this and opposed it. Groups like ISIS only identify as Muslim based upon their location of birth. They are nationalists, looking for power, incorporating bits of religion into their nationalist power grab. They are not practicing Muslims
You may ask, how do I understand all of this? Because it happens everywhere, exactly the same way. My political research is Russia and Orthodoxy. The nationalism there is known as Ethnodoxy. How one identifies purely as Orthodox because one is born Russian.
Their version of “Manifest Destiny” is Russia as a “Third Rome.” A country destined for greatness from God. When a leader like Putin cannot get legal/rational legitimacy, because well, it doesn’t exactly follow rule of law. When he can no longer get eudaemonic legitimacy, meaning
legitimacy based on how well the economy is doing, they turn to traditional legitimacy and traditional institutions such as the church. Not of the doctrines, but of the nationalistic, all Russians are born Orthodox to further their political career. Traditional values that are
based upon those cherry picked religious passages that will affirm the national identity whilst pushing those nationalistic bigoted ideals. Like punishing Pussy Riot because their behavior was against the church, when their behavior wasn’t illegal.
And what is the name given to a people that are ultra-nationalistic. That word would be fascism.
What is most worrying here is now the #SCOTUS are making decisions based upon these religious privileges I mentioned.
This is bad, but just the beginning. If we don’t end this, America will be a Theocracy, you know those countries we went to war with to “promote” democracy.
Countries like Iraq, which America stated were bad, those theocratic autocracies is exactly what they want. Those right wing conservatives think tanks that hijacked abortion have wanted to control government since the early 1970’s.
I’m adding this to the end to answer a question for @GrouchoBarks. The question being, “Why do we have In God We Trust,” if we are supposed to separate church and state?
Well this goes back to the 1930’s. After the Great Depression, capitalism was in decline. FDR presented the
New Deal based on “Relief, Recovery and Reform.” This was actually based upon the social gospel of helping those in need. The Capitalists hated it. There was the National Association of Manufacturer’s who would have an annual meeting every year with about 5000 Businessmen.
They decided to change religion. To a religion that you are “blessed” by God if you are rich. They had heard of a pastor in LA that preached to the wealthy. He was known as the “Pastor to the Millionaires.” His name was James W. Fifield Jr. He had created a bastardised version
of the New Testament that had removed passages about helping the sick and the poor. He would preach to them that they are wealthy because God favors them. Well the National Association of Manufacturer’s decided to let this pastor give a speech at the yearly meeting. They loved
him. He stated, “To give to the poor is un-Christian, because God only blesses those that work.” 250 of these massive businessmen decided to fund him to recruit other pastors that would push this narrative. They funded hundreds of radio stations across America. Ultimately God
