How can someone be lesbian and pan/bi?

There can be several reasons for that, for example:
- A lesbian has a partner who recently came out as non-binary, trans masculine etc. Now she wants to use a label that expresses her attraction to more than one gender. https://twitter.com/ButterflyAbuse/status/1332269569109610496
At the same time she doesn't want to give up her lesbian identity because she's still a part of the lesbian community.

- A woman with a fluid sexuality that changes over a longer period of time: She may feel no attraction to other genders for years.
- A woman who feels that she'll probably always end up in a romantic relationship with a woman, but is interested in casual sexual adventures with people of other genders. (Some would call this homoflexible or homoromantic and bisexual/pansexual)
- A woman who thought bisexuality wasn't real or was pressured to "pick a side" and identified as lesbian, but embraces her bisexuality now: Like in the first example she might simply not want to give up the lesbian label after many years of lesbian activism.
It's important to keep in mind that labels are not just here to describe your orientation according to some seemingly objective criteria. There is always a deeper dimension to it: It's about community, your personal history, belonging etc.
Please also keep in mind that the gatekeeping in online discourses isn't necessarily supported elsewhere in the LGBTI+community.

Read what the European Lesbian* Community has to say: "Our aim is to have an inclusive European and Central Asian lesbian network.
We insist on calling it a lesbian although we recognize that, as with any category or label, it may be contested and insufficient to describe the diversity of our communities. (...) However, using the word 'lesbian' is part of the political struggle for visibility,
empowerment and representation. We therefore use 'lesbian*' in our name with an asterisk, so as to include anyone who identifies as lesbian, feminist, bi, trans or queer, and all those who feel connected to lesbian activism."
