Let me explain.
The culture that surrounds poor people (their way of life) is one that ensures they remain poor.
If you're seen going against the norm (their norm) people start to dislike you.

They wonder why you don't participate in endless consumption like they do.
They wonder why you are serious towards certain things, unlike them.
They wonder why the things that interest them don't appeal to you.
In general, they wonder why you're not a loser like them.

They will dislike you for being different. You can't make them like you no matter how hard you try.
Your very existence annoys them because it makes them self reflect and brings their consciousness back to the losers they are.

Then the prospect of you succeeding; that only adds to the annoyance. They will hate you for making them feel bad about themselves.
If they like you, you're probably like them and that's why that's usually a problem.
If you're like them, you're going to end up just like them.

On the other hand, if you come from a rich background, the culture would usually tend towards wealth accumulation.
If everybody dislikes you it would be usually because you tend to be more of a consumer.

Your rich dad isn't going to be proud of his son who only knows how to spend big bucks but not how to make or grow wealth.
He looks at you and sees his life's work going to ruin when his time is up — very annoying.

Note: rich people who don't like each other don't waste time keeping in touch, only poor people do that.
Only poor people have the time to keep tabs on everybody including the ones they don't like.
(This is my observation though).

So your relatives wouldn't want to be associated with a loser. You soil the family name.
Everybody is into lucrative businesses, but you want to study gender relations at the University of Moxford.

This doesn't necessarily mean to try and get your family to dislike you if you're poor and it doesn't mean you should be seeking approval from your family if you're rich.
This is simply an observation for you to use in determining whether you're on the right track or not.

Of course, there are exceptions, but we speak of the overwhelming majority.
