(1) The infamous ‘Nus Qiyaamo’ attack on North Galkacyo is typically presented as an unprovoked attack by the United Somali Congress (USC) against innocent civilians. Proper historical analysis however bears this out as a falsehood.
(2) Nus Qiyaamo in reality was a retaliation for earlier massacres perpetuated by Siyaad Barre’s SNA; an SNA that included countless defectors from the Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF), the primary faction representing North Galkacyo.
(3) Innocent civilians were massacred in places such as Galkacyo, Docol, Wagalo and Baandiiradley; the very same civilians that had ironically turned down Siyaad’s weapons offer to massacre the residents of North Galkacyo.
(4) A sizeable percentage of the USC ground forces that participated in the Nus Qiyaamo incident had blood relatives that were murdered during these massacres. Natural impulse was rage and desire for revenge.
(5) A key tell-tale sign of propaganda is decontexualisation. Intent here is to lay sole blame on one side. Context conversely seeks nuance and historical truth. Always be on the watch out for this. Don’t be fooled.
