We are now seemingly at a point where the government is going to fully diverge from NPHET advice. It is their right to do that. The people voted them in less than a year ago and those are the rules, but we should examine where we are. A few weeks ago they took a gamble and chose
to disregard NPHET advice. When the data suggested this was flawed a few weeks later, they changed tack. I’d never criticise anyone for that. It’s the right thing to do. Any honest doctor will admit that she or he has called it wrong on occasion and harm has ensued. But we must
ask ourselves what is going on here and to me it’s simple. The government which has full political ownership of the national response to the pandemic, has decided to go with the advice of lobbyists rather than NPHET. The polls would suggest there is no popular clamour for this so
we must conclude it is not driven by a groundswell of public opinion. I don’t blame the lobbyists for this, it’s happening because they’re good at their jobs. That’s why we have a media that takes more interest in the nonsensical rants of the likes of McDowell, McNamara, McGrath
And McSharry (and that’s just 4 Macs) than they do of the fact that the people who are in charge of contact tracing and outbreak management are about to go on strike. Which leads me to the conclusion that if the government are just going to run with the lobbyists advice anyway,
Why are we wasting the time of the people on NPHET? I would suggest that if this is the craic then they should be deployed back to their day jobs, where I expect for those involved in the health service, in January they are going to be needed like never before.
