This whole back-and-forth of like "Ugh, why are you leftists so harsh on Obama's drone strikes? Where were you during the Bush years?" can be answered like this: Bush, Obama, & Trump all continued the post-9/11 war machine. The Left fucked up by not organizing an antiwar movement
There was a *brief* antiwar movement during the Bush years against the Iraq war composed of mainstream liberals who hated the lies about WMDs & leftists who were principally anti-imperialist. Obama, who ran on an anti-Iraq-war message, captured that energy in 2008.
Right when Obama got in office, he continued the U.S. war machine. Didn't close GTMO, ramped up drone strikes, etc. The antiwar movement died during the Obama years. Liberals went in defense mode to protect Obama. The Left mostly criticized drone strikes in media & Twitter.
During the Obama years, the Left didn't mobilize an actual antiwar movement by building up & supporting antiwar organizations. Some on the "Left" wanted to protect Obama, while others got in arguments about Syria & Libya. Meanwhile, no antiwar organizations were built.
Then Bernie runs in 2016; all the Left's energy goes into supporting the Bernie campaign & owning libs. Bernie never had an antiwar message & even supported limited drone strikes. But that didn't matter. All the Left cared about was supporting Bernie.
Bernie loses the primary. Clinton wins the primary in 2016. Trump wins the 2016 election. And we all know the next 4 years -- everyone is obsessed w/ the Cheeto-in-Chief and getting the Orange Man out of the White House.
Oh yeah, President Drumpf is now the Chief Cheeto Executioner & continues Obama's drone strikes & GTMO remains open. But did the Left bother to organize an independent antiwar movement? No. It's not just the Left; everyone stopped caring about U.S. wars.
This is a very American problem. Most Americans care about U.S. wars if they see dead U.S. soldiers on TV. That's why ppl were pissed w/ the Iraq war. They knew U.S. soldiers were dying. Drone strikes don't kill U.S. soldiers but they do kill others overseas but ppl don't care.
Here's the thing: we've reached a point in U.S. foreign policy where it's normal to just drone strikes ppl overseas for completely ambiguous reasons w/ no accountability under constitutional or international law & no one cares. And there's no grassroots movement opposing it.
I don't wanna get ppl down. I've been to GTMO, been in antiwar activism for years, been writing about U.S. wars for nearly a decade. I'm just giving an honest assessment of where the Left went wrong. If ppl are serious, they should learn from the Left's mistakes & move forward.
You can blame liberals all you want & any1 knows me knows I can't stand liberals. But, honestly, where the fuck was the U.S. Left in terms of organizing an antiwar movement? The Left really dropped the ball on that; it just focused on supporting Bernie & look what happened.
And to all the liberals who opposed the Iraq war during the Bush years but closed ranks to defend Obama's drone wars and said nothing about Trump's militarism...you guys are all moral hypocrites, have zero principle, and don't have a leg to stand on. I don't take you seriously.
If anyone wants to know where I was during the Bush years, I was in college organizing against the Iraq war & pushing for Bush-era officials to be tried for war crimes. I remember when Obama got elected, many ppl started to lose interest in those issues.
