Travelling from Lagos to Imo state, I had a heart ache and this wasn't because of the stress on the road but the thought of the expenses I was going to offset getting married to my bride traditionally.
I have never been a fan of borrowing to get married but while leaving Lagos, I told myself "bros, it's like you will a loan at least to offset some some bills". I called a couple of friends for a loan, but nothing positive. I got depressed the more.
From Lagos to Owerri, yes I was smiling but within me is a depressed man who kept on asking himself, "bros how far?". I had emptied my bank acct for this purpose. Infact, the previous day, I ensure I sent my whole Nov. salary as received to my parents to buy most of the items.
I spoke to a friend here who encouraged and told me not get a loan and if you must get a loan, i should get what I can pay back between 1-2 months. I didn't want to carry debt into my new home. I want to start my home even if it means with nothing.
My dad and his brothers had already gone to settle some of the items with the funds I sent the previous day while they wait for me for other expenses on the list. I told myself, if I had gone to this extent, then I must cross it regardless.
What will I tell my dad? That I don't have enough money to finish settling the list. Well, as a Lagos breed, worst case scenerior, I tell them to debit my account till month end. However, I wasn't prepared for the embarrassment this would cause me either.
On getting home, I went straight to my room, tried to see if I could write some code, until I slept off on my laptop.
Very early this morning, my dad called me and asked what the problem was. I told him my fears and he said, "young man, it's good you are feeling this way" in Igbo language.
This is a journey every responsible man must cross and money doesn't make marriage work, rather marriage is what makes money. I held that word.
