the school system is severely ableist, and here is a thread of just some of the reasons why:
loosing marks on something because it was handed in late
forced physical education
forced presentations
forcing students to speak in front of the class
forcing students to participate in group work
mass banning of fidget toys
points taken off of presentations/reading passages for stuttering or fidgeting
timed tests and work
marks deducted for messy handwriting
Not offering sign language courses/making sign language a mandatory course (some schools do have these as an elective, but most do not)
Being punished for having meltdowns/”disrupting the class” during class
getting yelled at/punished for stimming during presentations and tests
taking away any objects students are using to fidget with
not letting students move around/fidget
not allowing students to listen to their own music while they work
Teachers saying “you listen to the music i want to play or you listen to no music” aka teachers forcing students to listen to their music
Rewarding students for participating/lowering students marks for not participating
Marking students on orginization skills
The whole grading system that way, not sure if all schools do this but on report cards we would get marked for orginization, responsibility, participation, etc.
Not allowing gum in class "because its distracting"
Rewarding students for not missing days
Lowering marks for not having eye contact in presentations
Not having ramps/elevators
Marking students based on performance in gym class
Forcing students to do group projects because “interacting with other people is good for you”
Not allowing students to go for walks if needed
Forcing students to go outside for recess
Calling neurodivergent students “gifted” or “special”
Grading students on their ability to read tones in text
Continuation of the last one, grading students on their ability to “read between the lines” and “infer what the character is feeling”
Randomly calling on students
Reading out the names of students who have not completed their work…
Using the neurotypical, teachers pet, straight A student as an “example” while lecturing the neurodivergent student on “how to properly behave in class”
Stopping class and making the whole class look at a kid who is not paying attention or is distracted
Not allowing phones or devices at any time, especially lunch
Forcing students to sit in their seat and stay seated for multiple hours at a time
assuming student's silence when teachers ask something as rudeness
simply forcing us doing we’re not comfortable with.. and we need to just for grades.
please share/rt... i made this as an educational thrad to showcast just some of the things schools do that are outright wrong.

PLEASE look in the replies and qrts! there are a ton of great examples!!
to anyone who is insulting me or calling me slurs in attempt to offend me: its not working! your words arent hurting me. ive been bullied all my life and i have become immune to it, especially when you are a heartless stranger on twitter! keep it to yourself <33
ending this now, i wont be checking the replies or qrts anymore!! if you have any (respectful) questions, dm me or reply to one of my other tweets!! thank you so much :)
Being forced to overachieve. Being constantly stressed out while everybody else acts as if you couldn't Possibly Be Struggling Mentally in school. It makes it hard to get diagnosed, pushes a narrative of "smart people can't be ND.", and is overall harmful
okay update do not look in the quote rts as they have quickly filled with severely ableist remarks!
i mean,,, kinda late to do this but views! https://twitter.com/the1el3ven/status/1327114383361601538
