Why I love Deku and Misconceptions surrounding him:

{A thread}
Izuku Midoriya, or Deku, is the current protagonist of the popular series MHA. He’s also one of my favorite characters of all time and there’s a multitude of reasons why. However, there are also a lot of misconceptions surrounding him and im going to attempt to tackle a few-
-mainly the “crybaby” and “not deserving” critiques.
Background
Izuku was born into a world of superheroes and supervillains, people on the Earth had strange superpowers called “quirks.” However, a mere 20% of people on Earth possessed no quirk, Midoriya was part of the small minority.
At the age of 4 he was infatuated with the superhero “All Might” and looked up to him as an idol. Around this same time he found out that he had no quirk and was left with his dreams broken. His mom, the only parental figure in his life, was unable to reassure him that when he-
- needed it the most. Izuku would later be bullied by his peers for the next decade. As a result of the bullying he became a very shy, timid, and easy to step on person. His confidence was near rock bottom and that’s what makes him so human.
Unlike many other protagonists, he doesn’t hold a very positive image of himself and constantly second guessed his own ability. The only light he ever holds on to is the existence of his childhood idol, “All Might.” Midoriya wants to be the #1 Hero just like All Might and wants-
-to continue chasing his dreams.
Crybaby
A lot of the “critiques” surrounding Deku paint him as a loser and a crybaby. I believe that this is a large misinterpretation of his character. What makes Deku so human is his tendency to cry where other protagonists wouldn’t.
In any case, the amount of times he’s cried and for what reason has been harshly over-exaggerated. I’m going to address a few of the time’s he has cried. Starting off at the age of 4, Midoriya cried after finding out he was not born with a quirk and that his chance of being a-
-hero is very minuscule. It seems ridiculous that I even have to explain this so I’ll keep it short. He was nothing more than a child who’s dreams were shattered, he’d cry at this, it’s normal. Next, we have Midoriya crying after being rewarded All Might’s quirk “One For All.”
This is once again a very large misinterpretation of Deku’s character. You have to remember that All Might is the only person Deku looked up to, the only person that shined in his life. After almost losing his life and being told by All Might that he can’t be a hero, Midoriya-
-hit the lowest point in his life. There was no one for him to look up to, no one for him to chase after. As he’s walking home All Might approaches him and tells him the secret of his quirk, All Might mentions that he was once quirkless and earned his current quirk.
All Might tells Deku that he wants him to be his successor. This is the largest moment in Izuku’s entire life. The man he looked up to his entire life told him that “He Can Be a Hero” when no one else would. As a result, he finally gets the large stress that’s been piling up on-
-him his entire life out in a huge wave of tears, it’s a beautiful moment. Lastly, I’ll address him crying at Nighteye’s death. Once again, Izuku is still only a young teenager, his emotions are rampant and watching someone who helped him on his journey die is very tough.
A lot of the other times “he cries” are played off as gags. There a few other major times that put his character into perspective, but for the sake of my sanity I won’t explain all of it. Just know that a lot of the other times he cries he is 100% justified.
Not Deserving
The notion that Deku is undeserving of his power is something that’ll never cease to annoy me. Deku is the embodiment of what a true hero should be and that is reiterated throughout the series. In his first encounter with All Might he was accidentally responsible-
-for unleashing a villain that was now swallowing his classmate Bakugo whole. All of the surrounding heroes were hesitant and didn’t go to rush the villain. All Might was injured and unable to charge leaving Bakugo in a very bad position.
Izuku charges the villain without thought, the one powerless boy charged the villain that heroes were afraid to attack. He claws at the villain in desperation and in this moment All Might realizes that Deku is the chosen one. All Might takes inspiration from Deku’s brave-
-character and goes in to save the two young students. This goes on to show that Deku was 100% deserving of his quirk. He embodies the heart of a hero even if he didn’t have the power of one. That’s what made him more qualified than Mirio, Deku is a true hero.
Another example of Deku showing his colors was during his fight with Todoroki. I’m not going to dive into Todoroki because this thread isn’t about him, but long story short he hates using the fire part of his “Icy-Hot” quirk. During his fight with Todoroki, Midoriya encourages-
-Shoto to use his fire side, not because it’s a reflection of his father, but because it’s Shoto’s own power. Deku genuinely cares about society and the citizens surrounding him, he wants to see everyone else grow and doesn’t want to be selfish.
He could’ve not encouraged Shoto to use his fire side and would’ve had an easy victory. However, this isn’t reflecting of his compassionate demeanor. This is another reason why I love Deku, he cares so much for the people and the society around him.
I know this may not be the most the best thread and there are parts to it that you may not like. I cleared up a lot of the misconceptions surrounding him but to make things simple :
I love how human he is, I love how he works for his goals and also helps society progress while doing it. I love Deku because he is the embodiment of a true hero, he has his badass moments and he has his vulnerable moments. All of them make exemplify his wonderful character.
Wasn’t speaking English at the end here and messed up some wording. My bad😅
