(1/10) FinTwit seems broadly dim on $NIO. Understandable after its torrid year.
Here’s a thread of what bears are missing and why I think $NIO might someday be bigger than $TSLA.

(2/10) The first thing a $TSLA usurper needs is their own Musk. EM is a PR machine.
Enter William Li.
Like EM, WL was an Internet founder and billionaire before turning to EV. While he’s no match for EM’s controversy, he’s equally up to talking game. https://cntechpost.com/2020/09/28/nios-william-li-says-theyll-overtake-tesla-one-day/

(3/10) Here’s a narrative on Li.
Now I’ve read Ashley Vance’s bio on EM. Call me crazy, but I’m partial to Li’s self-mythologizing.
I bet Musk has better drug connects though.

(4/10) This comparison between the $TSLA and $NIO playbooks finds a lot of similarities.
Tesla is more than just a car company?
Nio is more than just a car company.
Even have many of the same investors. Notably Baillie Gifford, w/ their $300 $NIO PT. https://www.fool.com/investing/2020/08/20/more-than-just-an-electric-vehicle-maker-nio-launc/

(5/10) One would assume Tesla has an edge in intellectual property. But I find it hard to believe the CCP won’t eventually crack that nut.
And who might benefit from that info leak? Maybe all Chinese EV makers. Or maybe the CCP has a favorite?

(6/10) My theory is the house favorite is $NIO. Follow the money.
From their most recent cash infusion from the Hefei government to Tencent’s stake, there are many indications that Nio is in the gov’t good graces.

(7/10) The Tencent cosign is important. Americans assume all Chinese companies are in bed with the CCP. Untrue.
Tencent is a de facto CCP surveillance arm, and CCP leadership directly overlaps with Tencent’s.

(8/10) Long-term, I find it hard to believe Nio will lose the
market to Tesla, or vice-versa Tesla will lose the
market.
So, the key global market differentiators (imo) will be:
- Is battery-as-a-service > fast chargers? Atm I’d say yes. May change.

(9/10) - Who nails self-driving 1st? Not my realm to comment on, but I speculate China may have structural advantages in data collection.
- Who bests export infrastructure + product? Again I prefer China here, both for their policy focus on EV & connections to SEA and Africa.
