I am sure it is difficult to see past your personal privilege into how this effectively bars Black and Brown students from attending since these pops have disparities in generational wealth and the financial support necessary for medical school cost. https://twitter.com/chrissopkovich/status/1331974176203300868
You cited MD/Phd as an alternative, an option with FEWER spots nationwide than trad MD and increased competitiveness. Admission requires research competency, another area which severely underpays with increased hours. Another barrier to URiM students.
You paid almost $400K and you want everyone else to pay. Just say that. Donât dress it up as a false call for âpersonal responsibilityâ. Because we can see clearly that you only want people that can afford med school to go, which is classist, racist, and discriminatory.
It blows my mind that instead of recognizing this societal failure and committing to making it better for our children, itâs just accepted b/c itâs what you had to do. Equity benefits us all, it does not have to be this way.
Itâs possible to imagine better. Where becoming a doctor does not mean being saddled with half a million dollars of debt. Or that we are compensated in a way to manage payments without having to choose whether to spend the rest on ramen or gas.
Suffering does not have to be a part of medical education.
