interesting thread for everyone working in the creative industries! but also one thing that i haven’t seen anyone discuss is bordieu’s definitions of cultural/societal vs economical class which ties into the early 2010s study, The Great British Class Survey https://twitter.com/emmambearman/status/1331343799939903493
Huge survey reveals seven social classes in UK http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22007058 it’s a rather “old” study but a well interesting one and how the traditional definitions of class (upper, middle and working) isn’t really applicable in the 21st century
because we’re in a society that has more than just factory workers and factory owners (ie how marx and adam smith saw the world) and with the greater accessibility to higher education, the traditional definitions of class are no longer applicable
but also how britain as a society deals with class and how extreme the income disparity is here - ie being from a low income/low/middle income background in many other parts of europe, often equals the life of a more middle class briton
HOWEVER when it comes to the creative industries and specifically film and tv (as it’s what i have experience in), you’d need both a very high economical and cultural/societal capital in the sense that many internships are unpaid, london is where the jobs are (rent is high) >>
>> and networking within spaces that are socially adapted (literally the way HOW TO network and how most jobs are non-application but more who you know and made an impression on) to the middle/upper middle class are barriers that the film- and tv industries are facing.
