1. This thread notes a few similarities between Thailand & Portland protests 2020. Both influenced by Hong Kong. Last item is link to my Oct. 16 brief thread providing some background (for Portland people) on Thailand protests. #Whatshappeninginthailand https://twitter.com/MayWongCNA/status/1331603347057479681
2. Inflatable rubber ducks were used by protesters in Bangkok Thailand as protection from water cannons so rubber duckies in all sizes became protest symbol. Whimsey vs. authority. Squeaky pink pig toys provided some stress relief for Portland protesters. https://twitter.com/MayWongCNA/status/1331494690571448320
3. “Long Range Acoustic Device” (LRAD) deployed by police in Bangkok, Thailand and Portland, Oregon. In Portland only used for verbal announcements/threats but in Bangkok it has been tested recently as a noise weapon. Can cause permanent hearing damage. https://twitter.com/charliethame/status/1331456729763041281
4. Most Thailand & Portland protesters are young but elders also participate. (In Bangkok a couple of older marchers with close-cropped gray hair remind one of Portland’s protest stalwart R.) Hoping Bangkok marchers will be more consistent w. mask wearing. https://twitter.com/MayWongCNA/status/1331546899933966337
5. In retaliation for police assault with toxic water cannon dye, Bangkok, Thailand protesters covered police facility w. paint. In Portland protesters against police brutality often paint slogans on police facilities (which is then decried as “violence.”) https://twitter.com/jgesilva/status/1329041882609979392
6. Mutual aid, including free food, is intrinsic to protests in Thailand & Black Lives Matter events in Portland. Bangkok protesters also support street food vendors who are marginalized people often struggling to survive in difficult economy. https://twitter.com/MayWongCNA/status/1331551406763827201
7. Speakers in Bangkok protected by people w. military & martial arts experience. Similar to Portland’s Wall of Vets. Royalist groups have assaulted Bangkok protesters, incl. gunshots. Unfortunately bulletproof vests are illegal for civilians in Thailand. https://twitter.com/MayWongCNA/status/1331535067907203074
8/8. My brief backgrounder (Oct. 16, 2020) about Thailand protests (for Portland people.) With admiration. 🧋☕️
Thanks @MayWongCNA & journalists in both places for brave coverage. #WhatsHappeningInThailand https://twitter.com/EdithMirante/status/1317233996393140224
One more similarity. US manufacturer of teargas used in Thailand. Extraordinary amount of teargas has been used in Portland; protesters collected canisters & investigated health and environmental effects. https://twitter.com/HongKongHermit/status/1328743414284701696
