It was beautiful on this clear fall day, with gorgeous autumn foliage gracing the granite and stone civic spaces.

I was struck again by how many sentiments and monuments to our history remain relevant today, and will long into the 21st Century, as long as this nation endures.
We are not free from want, nor hatred & injustice, but the moral arc of our nation’s history has been bent towards progress in our institutions and character by generations of Americans working together towards a more just union, where all humans are created equal under our laws.
We remain a flawed democracy, burdened by the legacies of our original sins of slavery & wars against the First Peoples that dwelt here, long before Europeans colonized this land.
Too many Americans still struggle under the continued yoke of voter suppression & racial injustice.
Our union is weakened by moral failures, as the most powerful nation in history allows children to go hungry at night, veterans to go unhoused, senior citizens to struggle to pay for housing & healthcare, & the sick to die because they cannot afford vital medication nor surgeries
I imagine FDR would be pleased with the progress in our union, but disappointed by our division & dysfunction.

I bet he’d be angered by the rise of “America First” & the far-right nationalism the Allies defeated in Europe & Japan, & he beat here at home. https://www.britannica.com/biography/Charles-Lindbergh/Germany-and-the-America-First-movement
In 2020, a demagogue yelling America First has divided our union against itself, stoking hatred of our fellow Americans as enemies.
He now seeks to deny democracy by overturning the People’s will at the polls.
FDR would denounce Trump, as he did Lindbergh: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Charles-Lindbergh/Germany-and-the-America-First-movement
We should stand together against fascism & White nationalism, Big lies & medical mistruths, & unite behind universal human rights & democratic values, or we will fall bitterly divided, breaking apart as past empires have, & falling into rot & ruin.

E Pluribus Unum.
