I argue that whiteness is best understood as a subject-position rather than ‘identity’, relating to ways of knowing and experience of racialised structures 2/
Regarding knowledge, this subject-position is characterised by epistemologies of ‘ignorance’ (re. the role of race/empire in shaping the modern world), 3/
‘immanence’ (re. the role of the West as bringer of progress) and ‘innocence’ (re. the resultant inequalities and forms of violence) 4/
I analyse these tendencies in Waltz’s Theory of International Politics, Keohane’s After Hegemony and Wendt’s Social Theory of International Politics 5/
I argue that these tendencies produce weaknesses and tensions because of blindspots, distortions in underlying logic rooted in white-racialised subject-positioning 6/
However, it is possible to overcome these through abandoning these epistemological tendencies and embracing thought rooted otherwise 7/end
