Do Upwas & Nt just Fating

"Upwas is done when a human has a capacity to eat and he still doesn't eat & stays in sameepa with bhagwaan"

Upavasa Vrata is a process of sacrificing food and getting the aatma or jiva habituate Parabhrama smarana even after having the pain of hunger
It is said that when a jiva leaves the body, one has a pain of some lakhs of poisonous insects attacking us. Fastings are done to help human attain a stage where body overcomes all suffering and gets habituated to Parabhrama nama smarana.
This helps the manava shareera to overcome the pain of jivatma's exit from the body and we take the Parabhramas nama during that time. Upavasa takes us steps closer to attain moksha. Just not eating food and not practicing the eeshwar smarana is not upavasa.
One has to be in sameepa with eeshwar so that we stay grounded and our mind doesn't move away from bhagwan during pain. Upawasa deeksha is complete when done with proper understanding of abstaining food.
As per shastras, ekadashi and Shivratri are vratas for Kaliyug which should be practiced by people. Ekadashi vrata are 2 types which can be followed by gruhastas and bhramcharis and widowers in different ways. ( Decide based on Nirnaya Sindhu & Health of Body)
Just because it is for habit of pain doesn't mean to torture the body. It is that do the upawasa as per the capacity, if you can do for 2 hours, 3 4 5 12 .. start and practice in life. Increase the capacity if you are healthy, and decrease the house's if you are unhealthy
Don't torture the body for that sake. Women if a period overlaps, then do the upawasa by staying close to lord mentally, and take foods which are allowed and doesnt break fast.

(Ghee, milk, fruits, water) basic ones for any upwasa vrata.
Be it ekadashi or shiv ratri or any other vratas please don't torture your body. If body is not fine, your thinking ability , focus and concentration is lost from bhagwati Aaradhna. Try making smaller steps and achieve better goals.

Spirituality is a journey and nothing instant
If it is Vrat, abstain from alcohol, maans, dhoomrapaan, maithri, karmik foods & other vyasanas.
