Why @coldplay ‘s Everyday Life is deserving of it’s #GRAMMYs AOTY nomination. A thread:
EL was created to reflect personal and global life through music and emotion. It’s not an album designed to appease crowded stadiums, but to narrate the state of the world and touch on a little bit of a human “everyday life”. (“Arabesque” would SLAP in a stadium though 👀)
Coldplay quietly released this album which encapsulates a handful of genres they’ve never officially done, and they did a marvelous job in doing so. Gospel, spoken word, experimental alt rock, and more.
They collaborated with artists from around the world:
@davrossimusic - 🇮🇹
Norah Shaqur - 🇵🇸
@jacobcollier - 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
@Femiakuti - 🇳🇬
@Stromae - 🇳🇱
John Metcalfe - 🇳🇿
Tiwa Savage - 🇳🇬
(And many others including @Rikademus)
They drew inspiration from and used music and written word from many centuries & across the 🌍:
Saadi’s ‘Bani Adam’- Persia, 1200’s
ACFS “Jikelele”- South Africa
Officer’s racial profiling- PA, USA
“Cry Baby”- Bert Berns+Jerry Ragovoy
The Sun - Alice Coltrane
(I can’t fit all)
The song “Champion of the World” has an interpolation from “Los Angeles, Be Kind” by Scott Hutchison and is dedicated to him.♥️
The album was released in legendary fashion, a live-streamed performance from Amman, Jordan. Much of the album’s aesthetic, sound, and vibe echo that of the Middle-East. The album drives a “we share the same blood” culture in a world with so much islamophobia and racial hate.
The album may not top charts, but it is a meaningful album that represents the struggle of individuals, communities, races, & nations. It shows the beauty that exists in humanity as a whole. We all have hopes, dreams, fears and doubts, and Coldplay put it to music.
