"The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini (2003).

A beautiful and touching book, which captures very well the image many of us has of Kabul before war. It is also a daring book for Hosseini brings up many ethnic and cultural issues in Afghanistan that were taboo for too long.
Religions of the Silk Road: Premodern Patterns of Globalization by Richard Foltz (2010).

This book explores the majestically fabled cities and exotic peoples of Central Asia while examining how cultural traditions also travelled to the people encountered on the Silk Road.

This book analyzes the social and intellectual power of religious leaders who created a shared culture that integrated Central Asia, Iran, and India.

A millennia of Tajik cultural and scientific achievements.
"Poems" in Persian language by Partaw Naderi.

Translated into English by Sarah Maghuire and Yama Yari.
The Eastern Frontier: Limits of Empire in Late Antique and Early Medieval Central Asia by Robert Haug.

In this book Haug shows how Transoxiana, Khorasan and Tokharistan were not just a "frontier land" but a thriving region with a discrete yet growing powerful identity.
"Samarkand" by Amin Maalouf.

One of my favorite historical novels. First part revolves around Omar Khayyam and his Rubayât, Nizam al Mulk, Hasshan Sabbah, Seljuqs and the Assassins. Second part is on the Iranian Constitutional Revolution (1905-1907). Highly recommended.
"Javanmardi: The Ethics and Practice of Persianate Perfection" by Lloyd Ridgeon.

Interesting book on "Javânmardi", the Persianate concept of chivalry and manliness, that also encompasses character traits of generosity, hospitality, bravery, honesty, truthfulness and justice.
