I'm rewatching #MyMister #MyAhjussi and decided to create a thread of visual storytelling moments I missed the 1st time, like this gorgeous sequence from ep. 1. The tower represents Dong-hoon: seemingly solid but with visible cracks and immeasurable damage beneath the surface.
#MyMister #MyAhjussi ep. 2: Just before the 50 million won bribe is delivered to Dong-hoon, Ji-an is typing 50000 into a spreadsheet, foreshadowing her theft of the money and the ties she will develop with Dong-hoon as a result.
#MyMister #MyAhjussi ep. 2: Dong-hoon works in a literal cage.
#MyMister #MyAhjussi ep. 3: How did I miss this the first time around??? Dong-hoon and Ji-an are dressed in similar coats and carry identically shaped large bags, symbolizing the heavy burdens they both carry.
#MyMister #MyAhjussi ep. 4: Dong-hoon and Ji-an are often filmed through windows or frames, usually when they are under pressure or feeling trapped. But the meaning of windows and frames starts to shift as the narrative progresses so we'll be returning to this metaphor later.
In many Kdramas snow is paired with romance. But in #MyMister #MyAhjussi snow is associated with profound despair. In ep. 4 Ji-an trudges through the snow after she's severely beaten by Kwang-il. And Dong-hoon has his own moment of profound despair in the snow later in the story.
This is Dong-hoon's moment of despair in the snow in ep. 5. #MyMister #MyAhjussi. With a special shoutout to the cinematographer because this is just a flat-out gorgeous scene.
More cinematographer❤️: in this scene Ji-an is first filmed in a bluish light symbolizing isolation. But Dong-hoon & grandma are filmed in amber light signifying generosity & kindness. Ji-an's last shot has elements of both. She's starting to open up but isn't quite there yet.
In this scene from ep. 6 which takes place on the anniversary of Kwang Il's father's death, he's lit so he looks like he has blue bruises on this cheek and eye, foreshadowing what we learn later about him being an abused child #MyMister #MyAhjussi
Dong-hoon and Ji-an are seen through a window but unlike earlier in the drama when windows represented feeling locked in/trapped, it now shows their growing connection. Kwang-Il is on the outside looking in but he can see what's happening between them. #MyMister #MyAhjussi
#MyMister #MyAhjussi ep. 9 When Ji-an calls Dong-hoon Ahjussi for the first time, he quickly walks ahead of her, something he does throughout the series whenever he feels himself entering a danger zone of intimacy. Dong-hoon is extremely careful not to cross the line with Ji-an.
#MyMister #MyAhjussi ep. 9 Ji-an has used her tiny income to buy new slippers for Dong-hoon, but when she asks him to take her to dinner so she can give him his present he rejects her. The only sign of her pain in that moment is how the bag slips a little lower in her fingers.
#MyMister #MyAhjussi ep. 12 Dong-hoon's friend jokingly makes a heart at him through his car window but when the car pulls away he sees Ji-an standing on the sidewalk (in case anyone wants to argue whether this is a love story)
Something I love is how the director of #MyMister uses light to communicate the evolution of the relationship between Dong-hoon and Li-an. Contrast the blue, dim, flat light in earlier episodes with the light used in the opening scene of ep. 13
In #MyMister ep. 13, Yoon-hee drinks coffee, representing modernity and Western values. Dong-hoon drinks buckwheat tea, representing tradition. The differences that are tearing apart their marriage illustrated in one image.
In #MyMister ep. 14, Ji-an runs away and calls Dong-hoon from a phone booth. While he speaks to her, he stands in front of a sign that reads "Danger: Electricity." Their relationship holds hazards for both of them and yet their connection, the spark between them, is undeniable.
This isn't an overlooked moment but it's so amazing I had to add it to the thread: Ji-an deletes the wiretap from her phone and Dong-hoon's footsteps, the sound of which kept her going through so much hardship, fall silent. 😭 #MyMister ep. 15.
