In Herefordshire today, visiting Sarnesfield for #ArtsandCrafts #Coldswolds (ish) #churches. St. Mary's dates back to the C12th, with substantial C14 additions, a rich narrative embodied in historic fabric which the Arts & Crafts architects revered. All images by @badger_beard
In this church we have our first 'de-restoration'. In 1906-7 #RolandWPaul undid his Victorian predecessor's work by reinstating the C14 two-bay arcade that separated chancel from south chapel, thus bring chapel back into church. A glimpse on the far right here.
He also refitted the chapel with simple Arts and Crafts furnishings - possibly a new altar table, definitely the communion rail, stalls, and a slightly grand lectern probably standing in for a pulpit. This has lovely slender copper candleholders with repousse work.
A glimpse of Roland W. Paul's stalls (& a pleasing little chair from an earlier date?). We have no info on maker(s), so if anyone has any, please tweet!
Later, in 1922, #ChristopherWhall & #VeronicaWhall, possibly as one of the first commissions of their newly formed partnership, #WhallandWhall, were responsible for the east window. As with all images today, thanks to @badger_beard.
