I remember once writing a piece on Sunni male upper class identity being the only category fully accommodated in Pakistan’s nation building project. I brushed on other groups that didn’t have it so good: Pashtuns, Baloch, Christians, Shias, and a mention of Ahmadis. I was asked
to edit&erase the last bit. That was my first real brush with how Ahmadis were erased from national consciousness. This erasure has taken many forms other than violent, physical eviction from the body politic.Their brutalisation is manifested in the everyday - the silence, the fear
of associating with their own, the structures that tell them they don’t belong, the possibility of being lynched, and the silence of the state. While Ahmadis are killed& maimed everyday, Pakistan remains still, unperturbed by the darkness. One day the darkness will consume us all.
