Thread: #Labour welfare canard of
@BJP4India and @PMOIndia @narendramodi.

A Smokescreen: 1

It increases legal work hours of the already over-worked and exploited labour to 12 hrs from 8 hrs.

World over, scientifically progressive nations are reducing it to 6 hours. @ilo

The bait is that #labourers will be paid #overtime (OT) wages (which is typically 2 times the already low hourly wages).

However, in a country where government #labour officers cannot ensure even the low minimum wages, OT will be even harder to ensure.
A Smokescreen: 3

The supporters (i.e. the corporates) will argue that labourers are already working 12 hour or longer shifts.

That's true!!!

But that does not mean the #govt should legalise an offence because the #system is inept at protecting it.

The move, however, will not apply to well-paid and overpaid executives (managers and CXOs) who are generally paid relatively well in comparison to the work they do.

Most with power find a way to corrupt the system, skirt work or worse run the system aground.

Long hours for existing workers also means less work for youth. In the labour class work model, training weighs over skill. Hence, for bulk of the work more people can be trained and employed.

However, this 12-hour legalization grants impunity to harrassment.
A Smokescreen: 6

India is probably among the few countries (if at all there are others), where every person in power thinks that the #labour is overpaid and works less.

The generally voiceless contract labour usually accepts his/her fate and doesnt even shout back.
A Smokescreen: 7

For eg: Even in households across cities, a bunch of conniving aunties (power) decide what they should pay to #domesticstaff.

In most Indian cities, that is much less than Rs 900 per work that usually takes 2 hours to finish 3 works. + No transport allowance.
