Wow @thatonequeen is an actual saint. Really appreciate this clip of him pushing back on the misinformation Christian Walker shares on TikTok. His approach is gentle but just firm enough that it’s hard to argue against. This is a real skill!
If you have time/patience/emotional bandwidth, I suggest watching the entire vid
i appreciate this interview for so many reasons but most of all it exposes what i suspect of many of these viral career Trump supporters. outside of their inflammatory clips and sound bites, they struggle to present solid arguments. especially if you don't fall for their traps.
now. i don't think it's anyone's job to educate these kinds of folks especially when i believe most of them aren't arguing in good faith. they KNOW their arguments are flawed. but they want you to get upset, curse, name call and most importantly share their content.
but when/if someone has the patience to challenge them point by point, without name calling (which they love) and without an audience it becomes a lot harder for them to fall back on the cliches and flawed arguments they employ in 2 min viral videos.
notice that @thatonequeen also asks open ended questions, encouraging Christian to back up his opinion with facts. "why do you think that? where'd you hear that from? can you understand why" you see Christian struggle here bc he doesn't have info beyond the talking points
i dunno, i don't think Christian is delusional. I think he's calculated, which is much more dangerous. that said, i don't think Bob actually got through to him *but* i think he succeeded at exposing these types for what they are & modeled great debate https://twitter.com/muzicjunkie23/status/1329917697648418817
When ppl talk about “getting through to Trump supporters” this is why most of us scoff. Because it’s really hard to talk to someone who doesn’t argue in good faith. It’s emotionally draining, incredibly laborious & often doesn’t work. Not saying it’s *impossible* but it’s rare
BUT. There is some value in these sorts of convos. Not with Christian directly, but more arming people with how to refute these faulty claims with people they know personally (friends, family etc) people YOU might have success with bc you have a personal relationship w them
Think of it this way. If you’re at a dinner table & ONE person says something racist, pushing back on them might not change their mind, but it’ll make an impact on those at the table.
This is also why, as much as I see the value in social media for exposing ppl to new convos, I think the work HAS to be done offline. Like I say in my book (Shameless plug) when it happens online it too often becomes a WWE level performance & no one gets anywhere
