If any of my friends are not clear why increased restrictions are necessary in NI, please read this statement from the Northern Ireland Cancer surgical group https://nican.hscni.net/2020/11/18/statement-issued-by-regional-cancer-surgical-group/
It is essential that we drive down rates of COVID infections across NI so that the numbers of patients needing treatment in our hospital wards and ICUs fall. This is required to provide the capacity in our hospitals to treat other conditions including cancer.
Without a significant and sustained fall in COVID infection rates, more patients will experience delays in cancer diagnosis, delays in their surgical treatment and risk poor outcomes as a result of these delays.
Every week that passes with high levels of COVID infections adds to these delays. Our patients are your friends and family. The anguish they are experiencing as they await treatment is indescribable.
We need everyone to play their full part. Please obey the restrictions, reduce your social contacts, keep your distance, wear a face covering, wash your hands and follow isolation guidance if you have symptoms or are contacted by the tracing team or app.
If we can get through to Christmas, with the prospect of a vaccination, there is hope on the other side, and avoidable deaths can be prevented. #FightBack
