Indeed, the myth is rooted in Christian idiom as well. Treating the whole of Turtle Island as a New Eden, where the American Adam could present itself. Someone free of the burdens of "civilization" (another term invented to divide European societies against others).
In brief, European barbarians invaded North American civilization with their guns and germs. The European brute called everyone else barbarian to distract from their own barbarity.
