THE LIMINAL

A cosmology thread
Liminal spaces are something I talk about a lot so I thought it would be good to write a thread about them specifically, break down the different types there are and the significance they have.
The basic definition of a liminal space or place is its “betweenness” not quite here or there, just dead in the middle. A good example is the threshold of a door. When standing on it you are neither inside or outside, instead you are between the two
The same is true for roads, traveling is itself liminal, as you are passing from one place to another. A very potent place in occult tradition is the crossroads, where men were said to be able to speak with demons and make pacts with them.
Another liminal place is the banks of a river or the shores of a sea. It’s places like these where the veil between the worlds grows thin and beings are able to pass between them.
Another aspect is liminal points in time. Dawn and Dusk are the times between night and day, a liminal passage between yesterday and tomorrow. There are also liminal days throughout the year.
Halloween (or Samhain) is one of these days, and it’s power was only magnified for me at sundown. It’s times like this when the veil is thinnest, on a liminal day, at a liminal time, in a liminal place, strange things begin to happen.
I think that this is one of the reasons why people experience what is categorized under UFO encounters while traveling on the road at dusk. Lost time, blinding flashes of light, interacting with strange beings, maybe they tarried in the otherworld for a little while.
liminal zones arent necessarily gateways to the otherworld, that’s just one way to harness their power, like anything they can be used for good or evil. Hence the stories of the crossroads demon.
There’s also a ritual involving the corner of a room to enter the astral plane. This is why I’m the past people would line the walls of their room with salt to protect them against beings entering through the corners.
This is also why creatures like vampires (and cops) must be invited into your home, because the doorway acts as a barrier against them until they are given access by you. The same is true for fae/faeries, and why houses had more sacred significance in the old world.
