Organizing old pics. A traditional Sotho hut, during the Bush era. I was a stupid, young teen traveling across southern Africa. Still can't believe my fam let me do it. This town was remote. People there didn't know who Bush was, or that the US had presidents. Kind of refreshing.
The Sotho areas were beautiful, but ravaged by some of the worst concentrations of HIV in the world. In some of the towns, about 1/3rd of the adults had HIV. Brutal.
Got ushered into this alley by these two guys. Obviously didn't refuse. Turns out they just wanted me to take a picture of them. I never figured out exactly what the guns were for.
S. Africa. Almost got killed after wandering into this open lion enclosure. I backed out & they closed the gate just as he leapt. He crashed into the fence, fangs / claws through the links, inches from my face. I was terrified, but his presence & power were exhilirating, too.
More S. Africa. Leftover apartheid-era signage. House in the Soweto slums (randomly ran into Will Smith, of all people, there the same day--a whole story by itself). Win a cow if you buy Aquafresh toothpaste. Tiger ripping my jeans off. They'd be in tatters a few minutes later.
A "traditional" medicine shop. Bottles with all manner of substances + dried monkey carcasses everywhere, smelled awful. Run by a Gujarati woman lol.
