Hell, even Teochew and Hokkien are not mutually intelligible. I can understand Teochew as spoken in Singapore better bc it has absorbed a lot of Hokkien influence, but Teochew as spoken in China is almost completely incomprehensible to me. 2/4
Side linguist nerd note: why does the map put Leizhou (indigo) and Hainan Min (purple) into their own groups? Most linguists consider them branches of Min Nan, albeit extremely divergent ones. 3/4
Similar story for Shao-Jiang Min (red), most linguists now consider them Min Bei with significant Gan/Hakka influence. 4/4
